The Future of the Mobile Internet / Mobile Web
There are great expectations that the use of the mobile internet in the UK and other countries is going to be huge and eventually be bigger than PC use of the internet. In the BRIC countries, there are already more mobile internet connections than PC internet connections but PC internet use in these countries is much less than in developed counytries. But the biggest mobile web users are currently the US, Italy and the UK.
The mobile internet in the UK is growing in use rapidly and is predicted to grow massively during 2009 with availability and take-up of mobile phones with full mobile-internet access. WAP was a real disappointment providing a vastly inferior internet experience compared with PC access but the full capability of the internet with which we are used to using PCs is now available on some mobile phones models. It is not just Blackberries which now have full-web browsers, Nokia 95, the new Nokia N96, the Sony Ericsson C902 are some mobile phones offering fast and full mobile internet accessibility.

The use of the mobile internet is expected to be very different from the PC internet with local services being a key feature and clicking on links can mean connecting to a service provider by mobile phone rather than going to a web page. To get local services, mobile phones will need a GPS device built-in to provide the position of a mobile phone user, then service providers nearby can be listed on web pages to provide local info. The Nokia N96 one of the first phones to come with an in-built GPS and no doubt this will lead to the development of new mobile web services in time.
Mobile Codes are going to be a big part of the mobile internet world as they provide an easy method of connecting to websites with your mobile phone. Current mobile phones come with mobile code readers built-in and you simply point the camera of your phone at the mobile code displayed on a web page, business card or whatever and your mobile phone will open the website in its web browser.

So there are exciting times ahead for us all as one by one we upgrade our mobile phones to mobile phones with full mobile internet capability. Quite how the mobile internet will develop remains to be seen but it will be different to the internet of the PC desktop and the provision of local information and services is likely to be a major use as is entertainment via videos and games.
