You can get Digital TV Subscriptions from a number of different UK digital TV providers with services being offered by Sky (offering digital TV subscriptions for over ten years now), VIRGIN MEDIA BT Vision and Setanta Sports in addition to the free digital channels offered by Freeview. If you can receive the Freeview signal via your TV aerial, you can convert any television to a digital TV using a set-top box which is the cheapest way of obtaining Freeview (Digital Boxes from Dixons), or you can buy a digital TV with Freeview built in or buy a digital TV recorder which both receives a digital TV signal and which enables you to pause, record and rewind (Digital TV Recorders from Dixons).
HD TV digital television or High Definition digital Television is also available which provides much better picture quality including brighter colours and also better surround quality. There are several ways of obtaining HD digital TV but first you need to buy a HD-Ready TV and then you can either subscribe to a HD subscription service from a digital television provider like SKY HD TV or you can choose FREESAT.
FREESAT is a new digital service from the BBC and ITV offering free HD TV programming at no extra cost. Freesat is broadcast via satellite, so you’ll get TV, radio, interactive TV, and HD TV with crystal clear reception, and it’s available to approximately 98% of the UK population. Freesat has no monthly subscription, just a one-off payment for the digital box, satellite dish and installation which needs to be done by a qualified installer which you arrange when you purchase Freesat from a retailer such as Comet or Dixons: FREESAT from Dixons; FREESAT from Comet. Some HD Ready TVs come with FREESAT tuner built-in but you will need to install a satellite dish as well.
