CONNIE FISHER & THE SOUND OF MUSIC
THE SOUND OF MUSIC at the London Palladium starring Connie Fisher opened on 15 November 2006 under the spotlight owing to the unorthodox casting method employed to select the leading role of Maria Von Trapp. Connie Fisher won the BBC talent show, "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" to get this top west end leading lady role. This TV talent show was a huge success attracting much larger audiences than expected and was delightful entertainment with hit songs from the Sound of Music and other popular musicals which were sung by ten very talented aspiring Marias. In spite of the strong competition from the other nine contestants, Connie Fisher was the front-runner from the start consistently giving outstanding performances to the applause of both TV audiences and the judges.
ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER who is director of this production of the Sound of Music at the London Palladium played a big role in the TV show, How do you solve a problem like Maria, by deciding which Maria to save each week from the two Marias with the least number of votes phoned in by the public. In this role, Andrew Lloyd Webber saved Helena on three occasions and she went on to be in the final of How do you solve a problem like Maria. However, Connie Fisher gave another two resounding performances in the final which meant she won the leading lady role of Maria Von Trapp in the new production of the Sound of Music at the London Palladium.
AS would be expected, the TV show has proved to be a wonderful marketing vehicle for the musical but it has also revived interest in all London musicals which is of course great news for London's theatre land. Tickets for Andrew Lloyd Webber's new production of the Sound of Music starring Connie Fisher can be bought from LondonTheatreDirect.com and the show runs until mid-April 2007.
