Table 1    Mean temperature anomalies at ten European stations during summer 2003 relative to 1961

Summer 2005 in in the UK & Europe

Using the ten European stations with long records which this website regularly uses to assess European temperatures, summer 2005 had a mean temperature 1.2 C above the 1961-90 average (Table 1) which gives it a ranking of 6th warmest since 1900 (Figure 1). So another very warm summer in Europe. June 2005 was anomalously warm in south west Europe, particularly Spain & Portugal with very warm airmasses affecting this region and the heat was enhanced by the drought conditions which already existed after the dry winter. Temperatures in July and August although warm overall were not remarkable except in Finland where an anomaly of +2.7 C occurred in July 2005.
